CER851UM OVERSIZE IRON HEADS

For 2006 we are proud to offer the 851UM Oversize Series of Irons. The challenge with this new design was to increase the size dimension of the face without affecting the Ultra Playability rating of the 851 UM. To do this, we had to be sure we moved the mass in the right way to keep the center of gravity in the proper location. Over the years many companies have done "oversize" designs by just blowing up a standard size design without regard for how the critical mass moves.

On the 851UM Oversize model, although we increased the toe height by .125", we were able to maintain a low and centered C.G. (center of gravity) by putting more mass lower in the sole of the head.

So, where did the extra mass come from to put in the sole, you might ask. We reduced the face thickness at the top of the cavity and we reduced the top line thickness top to bottom.

The top line on the 851UM Oversize is wider from the top view, but it is thinner top to bottom. The actual vertical center of gravity in the new 851UM Oversize is an amazing .664". This is within .009" of the non-oversize 851UM, but with an increased blade profile size. We also increased the width of the undercut cavity, which moved the center of gravity further back from .537" in the original design to .550" in the new design. This helped us maintain a low actual vertical center of gravity location, critical in determining playability. What we did not do is increase the blade length or the hosel length. We felt the blade length was just right and an increase in hosel length would negatively affect the C.G. location.
Another unique feature of the CER 851UM Oversize irons is the loft progression. Starting the set with a 4 iron with 22° of loft, we progress the loft through the set by 4° all the way through the Sand Wedge (54°). This consistent 4° progression gives players a much more consistent distance progression in their shots. For the complete specifications on the CER 851UM Oversize iron, see below the specification chart. As always, and by the request of many, we will continue to make the CER line of irons a priority in our product development efforts. We understand the need to have a true "brand" that professional clubmakers call their own. Our goal is to make the CER line of irons the highest quality, highest performance brand a professional clubmaker can offer.

  • Oversized design to enlarge hitting surface and increase confidence
  • Highest Maltby Playability Factor rating of any “Oversize” iron ever designed
  • Undercut cavity design to move center of gravity lower and more rearward for higher initial launch angle
  • Additional mass placed directly behind the club head’s sweet spot
  • Wide sole with ample bounce (3°) allows players to be more aggressive “down and through” the ball without the risk of hitting the ball fat
  • Shorter hosel design allows for more mass to the perimeter, enhancing game improvement
  • Progressive offsets to help square the club face in the longer irons and to improve alignment in the shorter irons
  • Precision cast from 431 Stainless Steel
